Wednesday 2-18-09: Military Hospital PT

Today, I took some pictures of the electro/magnetic/ultrasound area in the Military Hospital´s PT department. Most things are familiar: electrical stimulation, ultrasound, diathermy. Something we don´t use in PT in the U.S.: magnetic therapy. You can scroll down through many treatment protocols, here is a picture of just a few. They also use it to heal bone fractures faster...I´m not so sure how effective this is but it´s interesting to see it. The ultrasound looks about the same and this one actually looks quite modern. I did not spend any time using these in Ecuador but MANY patients are treated with these modalities in addition to exercise therapy.
I have to include this picture in the blog. We see this guy on the same street frequently. He is ¨standing¨in between lanes of traffic near and intersection and when traffic stops he asks people for money. This picture could represent many people in Ecuador with physical problems who beg for money. There are also MANY people in the streets who juggle or do tricks for money and people who go on buses singing or selling things for money. What breaks your heart is when they are only 6 or 8 years old. These are the children who are truly ¨left behind.¨
