Thursday 2-19-08: Saquisili & Latacunga

This weekend is Carnival, the traditional festival before lent that takes place in most areas of South America. Technically the holiday is Saturday through Tuesday but most people get started early so we decided that we would too. We went with two friends (Emily and Ben) to see Quilotoa, a beautiful area about 4 hours south-east of Quito, nestled high up in the Andes.

We hired a private driver so that we could do things at our own pace. We stopped at two towns along the way, Saquisili & Latacunga. Thursday is market day at Saquisili so we wandered around a bit and took some pictures. The Indigenous people inhabit these cities and dress in such beautifully bright clothing. There were several people using antique Singer sewing machines with a mechanical push foot pedal to alter and repair clothing. These fish laying out in the sun didn´t smell too good but it was worth a picture. Later, we had lunch in Latacunga and had to dodge some water balloons, yep, carnival was getting started early.
