Fri/Sat 2-13-09 & 2-14-09: El mercado de Otavalo

On Friday afternoon, Britton and I took a bus to Otavalo (about 2 1/2 hours north of Quito). Otavalo was an indigenous trading post long before the Spanish came to South America and the tradition of bringing handmade goods to the market persists today. We met up with some friends for dinner and had great entertainment, an indigenous band.

On Saturday, we woke up early to go to the animal market, a large muddy field filled with pigs, cows, goats, lambs, chickens, and more. The locals paid us very little attention, it´s obvious that gringos are only there to look and take pictures, not to buy. Next, we went to the produce market which was huge and overwhelming. Finally we went to the general market were everyone wanted to talk to us and to convince us to buy their goods. I bought two pairs of earings from this women with her child on her back (this mode of baby on board is really common). There is a market here everyday but Saturday is HUGE. It is impossible to take a picture that shows how large and overwhelming the market is and of course bargaining is a necessity so it was pretty tiring but fun.
