Honeymoon - Wednesday 6/25/08

On Wednesday morning, we checked out of the hotel early and headed up into the mountains, FAR into the mountains, one last time to see a self-sustaining organic farm. The road to get there was so rough (think rocks, mud, holes, mounds), obviously made for animals and trackers, we weren't sure we'd make it in our little Toyota Yaris.

The farm was really interesting and well worth the drive. They produce all their own electricity through hydroelectric power. They raise grass fed cattle and use the solid manure for fertilizer and the liquid manure to make methane gas for cooking. (Yes, we got to see the separation process.) They also raise goats, pigs and horses and take care of several wild animals that have been injured (they have a veterinarian on staff). All the fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers are grown organically so we learned about plants that repel insects and homemade scarecrows. Parts of the property that were deforested by a previous owner are in the process of being reforested. One pig took a liking to Britton.

On our way out of town, we took a moment to snap our last pictures of the Arenal Volcano and then we headed south for Punta Leona on the Pacific coast.

We arrived in Punta Leona (just north of Jaco on the map from Sunday's entry) in time to go for a walk before sunset, enjoy a glass of Costa Rican wine and head to the resort's restaurant for dinner.
